Xalapa (alternative spelling Jalapa)is a mountain town a couple of hours from the Gulf shore. The University is big (lots of young people) and there are a lot of cheap cultural events–June is music month. You can take Spanish classes and go climbing up a snow covered volcano or another nearby mountain. Food is good (Mexican Lite) and cheap.
