I want to travel around, and I want to do it now before I get too old and have too many responsibilities. Is there a way that I can travel super cheap? I don’t mean just air fare, but where to stay and how to tour around, too.

I’m the cheapest traveler I know. Some of the things I’ve learned:
I’m terrible at saving money. So what I used to do was take one entire check and spend it on airfare for a flight leaving within two months. Then I’d save all my money until then for when I arrived at my destination. I was forced to save money if I knew I had a ticket already.
I signed up for NWA’s Frequent Flier program (WorldPerks). And then when I’d travel, I’d collect miles… and on my next trip, I’d cash in my miles and add some money for a cheap flight. They have deals in spring and fall. I’ve went to Germany for only $200 plus 10,000 of my frequent flier miles. I went to Turkey a year ago for 10,000 of my miles plus $500.
I spend a ton of time researching the cheapest flights. If that means changing dates around, that’s fine. I only fly in spring and fall when prices are cheapest.
I spend even more time researching the cheapest but cleanest hotels. I’ve stayed in Luxor for less than $20 a night in the cleanest little family-owned hotel. I stayed in a yogwan in Seoul for only $15 a night.
I spend the most time researching sites I want to see. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, pretty much all hotels will offer tours or give you brochures to learn about how to get somewhere. But the research you did beforehand will help too. I had read that I could get from Beijing to the Great Wall if I write a note in Chinese and give it to a taxi driver. That’s exactly how I got there. I read beforehand that I could take a specific subway line from my hotel in Prague to the castle, and when I got there that’s what I did.
Travel can be fun and easy and cheap if you do your homework! And don’t expect too much. You can go overseas and visit a couple of different cities in less than a week. I’ve been all around the world and have never spent more than $2000 total (including airfare) on all of my trips. Have fun!

travel by ship can be cheaper if you go on a cargo ship and help out the crew – maybe empty bins or if you have a skill in the kitchen, they’ll accept your offer.by the way, call it a galley, not a kitchen, is the way to go.

Lots of bus riding……….if you are doing Europe then you can safely hitchhike but I still wouldn’t do it. I did it when I was 22 and I was fine though haha! Little old ladies used to feel sorry for me and pick me up. Stay in hostels, not hotels, that way you will also encounter other backpackers……yeah, you’ll figure it out as you go along, all part of the fun!
