We plan to stay in the city over New Year but would love to spend a week or so relaxing on a beach afterwards. I’d be willing to fly regionally, although not more than 2-3 hours.
Can you suggest a nice beach in the Indonesian / Malaysian / Phillipean area?
I can recommend the Nexus Karambunai Resort just out of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah Malaysia. It was private beachfront and if you want to indulge in watersports they have shuttle buses running regularly to a nearby lagoon where you can jetski, windsurf etc.
They also have regular buses running into and out of Kota Kinabalu which is about 35 minutes away.
Whilst there i took the short flight to Sepilok near Sandakan to see the orangutangs and a couple of other trips which were organised after i got there via the tourist representative that they have there.
Everything there was done very professionally and they even had the taxi still waiting for me when i got to the airport at 5am after my flight was delayed for 5 hours
The price was also right.
I’ve also heard good reports about Penang Malaysia but i can’t relate anything first hand
Happy holidaying

Shall I suggest Phuket, Thailand??? There is a direct flight by silkair. And it uses new aircrafts. No need to woory about crashes. The beaches thare are really nice.
The phillipeans has Cebu. Nice for diving. Lots of marine activity. Oh, and Bintan, Indonesia has average beaches. perfect for people on budget. (If u are.)
P.S. Its been a pleasure answering this question.

The nearest is to take a ferry to Desaru Malaysia from Tanah Merah Ferry terminal. about 2 hours boat ride and free direct hotel transfer from the ferry terminal. Not much crowd and very good tide.

I would recommend our very own beaches here in the Philippines.:
1. Boracay Island
2. El NIdo resort in Palawan
3. Mactan Island in Cebu
Google these beaches and you’ll find spectacular photos. I would also recommend spending new year’s eve in Boracay.

I would recommend two of my favourite resort which are both near Singapore:
1 Banyan Trees – Bintan
http://www.banyantree.com/
It just a 30 min boat ride away. One of the most luzurious resort you can find around here. Some of the rooms come with it own outdoor jacuzzi which is well hidden with natural florage so you have do skinny dipping in your own private area. If you like the beach … they have their own private beach as well.
2 Dusit Resort – Hua Hin Thailand

A great peaceful resort that is more for the local rather than tourist to thailand.
Enjoy and have fun
